Rick James auditioned for Motown in 1966 as part of the “Mynah Birds”, which was later to include Neil Young. However, James fell foul of the US Naval Reserve and ended up in the Brig. He was frequently associated with a wild lifestyle and it wasn’t until 1981 that he had a number 16 success with “Super Freak”. The song was subsequently used in a number of film and TV soundtracks.
