Although The Elgins were formed in 1962, they had sung together in the late 1950s as The Sensations, The Five Emeralds and the Downbeats for Motown. The quartet consisted of vocalist Sandra Mallett (Edwards), Johnny Dawson, Robert Fleming and Cleo (Duke) Miller. Their first release “Darling Baby” made No 4 on the R&B charts and coincided with their permanent name change from the Downbeats to the Elgins.

“Heaven Must Have Sent You” (Holland/Lamont Dozier) was another top ten hit for them and their most successful release.
